Workout buddies are fantastic. They motivate you and make sure you're doing your best. But what happens when your workout buddy is gone? Maybe at first you enjoy the half-assed workouts or rest days, but then you really start to miss your routine and your #1 motivator. Since Maddi and I are currently 2,140 miles apart for 3 months and sympathize with your pain, here are 8 ways to survive and thrive.
- Get a new one: You're taking a break! It's perfectly okay to see new people. Trust me, though, you'll miss the original.
- Keep a journal: Your new best friend is a pen and paper. Writing your workouts down will make sure you work hard. No one wants to write down "1 burpee." You want to write down "ran 5 miles AND did arm day." Trick is NO LYING. Don't cheat yourself, people!
- Keep each other accountable: Text each other what you did that day. I felt pretty crappy when Maddi said she went for a run as I was rewatching Game of Thrones and eating Pringles. Odds are you'll feel bad too.
- Stay on the same schedule: By both of you completing the same workout you'll feel more obligated to do the whole thing. No half-assing!
- Make it a competition: Everyone has a competitive side. Put it to good use by seeing who can make the most gains during your time apart.
- Think about what you want: This time apart is excellent for improving your discipline. Think about the goals you wish to accomplish to make sure you get up and kill it at the gym. You won't get that chiseled physique sitting in front of the TV! (Unless you're doing this!)
- Workout at the same time: By setting a specific time aside each day to workout you'll be more prepared to put in the work. You know exactly when you have to workout so you can mentally prepare to do your best. Additionally, since that time you set aside is solely for working out you won't skip it because you have nothing better to do! That new episode of Game of Thrones can wait. (Or schedule your workout for after).
- Keep it fresh: Make sure you're not just running on the treadmill 24/7, switch it up. NO ONE LIKES BORING WORKOUTS! Who wants to do something they don't at least sorta like?
